Finances

Sources of funds

Most of our funds come from sponsors of individual children. We ask for £500 (US$760) per year per child. Most of that is spent on food and school fees.

Funds are collected via bank accounts in the UK and Australia registered our UK-registered charity, Upendo UK, who manage these funds. Annual summaries of accounts can be inspected upon request.

If you wish to make a donation, please contact the Upendo Uk Treasurer or Margaret Mackinnon via the Contacts page.

For money received from UK taxpayers, we receive an extra 28% from the UK government. This bonus is critical for paying secondary school fees of our older children, many of whom will start in 2013.

We also receive money from the Karibuni Trust.

Financial management

We have a well-organised internal accounting system which keeps track of expenditure under different activities for the Orphans Support Project. Training support for this has been kindly provided by MANGO, an organisation that helps NGOs manage their finances (click here for a video on how MANGO has helped us).

Separate accounts are kept for the Orphans Project, Nursery School, Primary School and Day Care Centre. The latter three operate on a commercial basis to help raise funds for the Orphans Project.

Annual summaries of accounts can be inspected upon request.

Upendo means love in Kiswahili.
